Augmentin

Active Ingredients:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Clavulanic acid

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Augmentin is a combined broad-spectrum antibiotic which is resistant to β-lactamase. Augmentin contains two active ingredients amoxicillin and clavulonate potassium.

Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic, active against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is inactivated by β-lactamases, and therefore the spectrum of its antibacterial activity does not include organisms that produce β-lactamases. Amoxicillin exerts bactericidal action which associated with inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Amoxicillin inhibits the enzyme transpeptidase that is responsible for peptidoglycan production. Peptidoglycan is one of the main component in bacterial cell wall. Clavulonate potassium is beta-lactamse inhibitor. Clavulanic acid helps to overcome resistance in bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, which otherwise inactivates most penicillins.
