Bactrim

Active Ingredients:

  • sulfamethoxazole
  • trimethoprim

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Bactrim is a broad spectrum combined antibacterial medication which belongs to a group of medicines called sulfonamides. Bactrim exerts bacteriostatic action, in high doses bactericidal. Action mechanism of co-trimoxazole is associated with its active components sulfometoxazole and trimethoprim, which exert synergistic effect on metabolism of folic acid. Bacteriostatic effect of sulfometoxazole is related to inhibiting the process of p-amino-benzoic acid utilization and interfering with the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid in the bacterial cells. Sulfometoxazole and Trimethoprim block two consecutive stages of purine and pyrimidine synthesis and thus nucleic acids.
