Active Ingredients:

  • ciprofloxacin

The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Cipro manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals is available under commercial name Ciprodac.

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Broad-spectrum antibiotic, belongs to fluoroquinolones II generation. Breaks the biosynthesis of DNA, growth and replication of bacteria; causes significant morphological changes (affecting cell walls and membranes) and rapid cell death. Affects microorganisms in the period of growth and rest. Most active against Gram-negative bacteria, in a lesser degree affects anaerobes.

Medical indications:
For systemic use: bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms

  • infections in otolaryngology (otitis media, frontal sinusitis, sinusitis, mastoiditis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis)
  • lower respiratory infections (bronchitis and acute exacerbation of chronic pneumonia, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis)
  • infections of pelvic organs (cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, adnexitis, salpingitis, oophoritis, endometritis, tubular abscess, pelvioperitonit)
  • infections of skin and soft tissue (infected ulcers, wounds, burns, abscess, phlegmon)
  • infections of bones and joints (osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
  • sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, chancroid, chlamydia)
  • infections of the abdominal cavity (bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder and biliary tract, intraperitoneal abscess, peritonitis, salmonellosis, typhoid fever, campylobacteriosis, yersiniosis, shigellosis, cholera)
  • bacteremia, septicemia, severe infections on the background of immunodeficiency and neutropenia, prevention of infections during surgery

In ophthalmology: infectious and inflammatory eye diseases

  • acute and subacute conjunctivitis
  • blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis
  • keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, bacterial corneal ulcer
  • chronic dacryocystitis, infections of the eye after trauma, pre-and post-surgical prevention of infectious complications in eye surgery

In ENT: otitis externa, treatment of post-surgical infectious complications

Cipro contradictions, precautions and warnings:

  • hypersensitivity (including to other fluoroquinolones)
  • glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficit
  • pediatric and adolescent patients
  • pregnancy, breastfeeding
  • in ophthalmology: viral keratitis, pediatric patients
  • with caution: severe cerebral arteriosclerosis, cerebral circulation disorders, mental illnesses, epilepsy, epileptic syndrome, renal and / or liver insufficiency

Cipro side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with ciprofloxacin. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Cipro may cause the following side effects:

  • digestive system: nausea, vomiting, appetite disorder, diarrhea, constipation, pseudomembranous colitis, epigastric and abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, hiccups, ulcers, dryness and soreness of the oral mucosa, flatulence, gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis, cholestatic jaundice , hepatitis, necrosis of liver cells
  • nervous system and sense organs: headache, dizziness, excitement, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, confusion, depression, phobias, fatigue, blurred vision, taste perversion, tinnitus, transient hearing loss, mood lability, gait disturbance, increased intracranial pressure, paresthesia, sweating, ataxia, tremors, convulsions, toxic psychosis, paranoia, hallucinations, headache
  • cardiovascular system and blood (hematopoiesis, hemostasis): blood pressure decrease, cardiovascular collapse, arrhythmia, cerebral thrombosis, paroxysmal tachycardia, leukopenia, leukocytosis, anemia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, prothrombin level changes
  • respiratory system: pulmonary embolism, dyspnea, respiratory distress, bronchospasm
  • locomotor system: arthralgia, myalgia, tenosynovitis
  • urogenital system: repeated urination, crystalluria, hematuria, cylindruria, polyuria, proteinuria, acidosis, urinary retention, hemorrhagic cystitis, nephritis, vaginitis, gynecomastia
  • allergic reactions: rash, petechiae, blisters, papules, cutaneous vasculitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome, exudative erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, itchy skin, swelling of the lips, face, neck, conjunctiva, limbs, angioedema, urticaria, anaphylactic shock
  • other: hyperpigmentation, eosinophilia, fever, photosensitivity, increase of level of liver transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, urea, serum triglycerides, glucose, potassium, bilirubin; dysbiosis, candidiasis

Drug interaction:
Cipro can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • bronchodilatators
  • oral anticoagulants
