Levaquin

Active Ingredients:

  • Levofloxacin

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Levaquin contains the active ingredient called Levofloxacin which belongs to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolones. Levaquin works by blocking DNA-gyrase and topoisomerase IV, inhibits supercoiling and cross-link of DNA. Levaquin inhibits the DNA synthesis causing deep morphological changes in cytoplasma, cell wall and membranes in the microorganisms. Levaquin is effective against a wide variety of microorganisms including gram-positive, gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.

Medical indications: Levaquin is approved to treat infectious diseases caused by susceptible to Levofloxacin bacteria:

  • ENT infections (acute sinusitis)
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Infections of the urogenital system (acute pyelonephritis, prostatitis)
  • Infections of the genitals
  • Infections of the skin and soft tissues
  • Infections of the abdominal cavity

Levaquin contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Levaquin should not be taken in these conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Epilepsy
  • Joints damaged caused by quinolones
  • Children under 18 years of age
  • Levaquin should be used with caution in elderly patients, deficiency of G6PD

Levaquin side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Levaquin. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Levaquin may cause the following side effects:

  • Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, digestive problems, pseudomebranous enterocolitis, increased activity of the liver's enzymes
  • Cardiovascular system: decreased hypertension, vascular collapse, increased heart rate, prolonged QT interval
  • Endocrine system: low blood sugar levels
  • CNS: headache, dizziness, tremor, anxiety, paresthesia, anxiety, hallucination, confusion, depression, epilepsy
  • Sense organs: anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis
  • Allergic reactions: itching and skin rash, hives, erythema
  • Other: photosensibilization, asthenia, fever, superinfections.
