How does the medication work?
Advair Diskus is a combined medication containing salmeterol and fluticasone propionate.
Salmeterol is a selective β2-agonist with prolonged effect (12 hours). Salmeterol provides effective protection against bronchoconstriction and prolonged bronchodilation (not less than 12 hours). Salmeterol is a potent inhibitor of inflammatory and allergic mediators such as histamine, that are released from the mast cells.
Fluticasone propionate is corticosteroid that exerts a potent anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory action on the lungs. This results in decrease of bronchial asthma symptoms without causing systemic adverse effects.
