How does the medication work?

Ventolin contains the active ingredient Salbitamol which belongs to β2- adrenoreceptors. In therapeutic doses Salbutamol acts on β2 adrenoreceptors of the bronchial smooth muscles and does not affect β1- adrenoreceptors. The medication exerts a potent bronchodilating effect, prevents or relieves bronchospasm, decreases resistance in the airways, increases pulmonary capacity.

Salbutamol also increases mucociliary clearance, stimulates mucous secretion, activates function of ciliate epithelium.

In therapeutic doses Ventolin does not affect cardiovascular system, does not increase blood pressure, causes moderate dilation of the coronary arteries.

Why is Ventolin prescribed?

Ventolin is prescribed in:

  • Relief of bronchial asthma attacks including aggravation of bronchial asthma
  • Prevention of bronchospasm associated with allergens or caused by physical overloads
  • Maintaining therapy of bronchial asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease accompanied by obstruction of the airways including chronic bronchitis

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the drug ingredients

Ventolin should be used with caution in patients with:

  • Tachyarrhythmias
  • Myocarditis
  • Heart diseases
  • Aortic stenosis
  • Coronary heart disease

  • Hypertension
  • Thyrotoxicosis
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Epilepsy
  • Renal or hepatic failure

What side effects are possible with Ventolin?

  • Allergic reactions: reaction of hypersensitivity including hives, angioedema, bronchospasm, arterial hypotension, collapse
  • CNS: tremor, headache, hyperactivity
  • Cardiovascular system: tachycardia, dilation of peripheral arteries, arrhythmias including cardiac fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and extrasystole.
  • Respiratory system: bronchospasm, irritation of mucous lining of the oral cavity and throat
  • Musculoskeletal system: muscle seizures
  • Metabolism: low potassium blood levels, lactic acidosis
