Cholesterol is a substance needed for every organism to function properly. Cholesterol is presented all over your body: in nerves, brain, liver, heart, skin, cells, etc. Cholesterol plays an important role in producing vitamin D, bile acids and hormones. However, our organism needs only a small amount of this fatlike substance. Oversupply of cholesterol can be deposited in arteries that may lead to narrowing or even blocking of the latter ones. Blocked arteries may lead to heart diseases.
In order to be sure about your health, do not neglect a simple blood test that would reveal your level of cholesterol. But just one test still wouldn't be enough to be completely sure. A complete lipid profile will measure your LDL, HDL and cholesterol.
A harmless cholesterol level is 200mg/dL or lower. Desirable LDL level is 100mg/dL and your HDL should be approximately 40mg/dL.
The most important in high cholesterol treatment is to reduce chances of stroke or heart attack. A healthy diet would help. First of all stop eating a lot of saturated fat, leave a more active life and in case needed - reduce your body weight. Fighting high cholesterol, it is important to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol.
