Active Ingredients:

The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Lipitor manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals is available under commercial name Atorbest.

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Lipitor belongs to anticholesterol preparation called statins. Like other stains Lipitor works by blocking the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the synthesis of cholesterol by the liver cells. The inhibiting of this enzyme helps Lipitor to decrease the amount of "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and increase HDL "good cholesterol" levels. Atorvastatin also lowers the blood levels of triglycerides.

Medical indications: Lipitor is licensed to treat the following cardiovascular conditions:

  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Prophylaxis of cardiovascular complication such as heart attacks, strokes, atherosclerosis

Lipitor contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Lipitor should not be taken if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Aggravation of liver diseases including liver cirrhosis
  • Muscles diseases
  • Pregnancy and lactation period
  • Children under 18 years of age

Lipitor should be taken with caution: in alcoholism, liver diseases in anamnesis, severe disorders of the electrolyte balance, endocrine and metabolic disorders, arterial hypotension, sepsis, epilepsy, trauma.

Lipitor side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Lipitor. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated.

  • Lipitor may cause the following side effects: headache, muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhea, infections of the upper or lower respiratory tract, sinusitis.
  • Serious Lipitor side effects include: sings of liver damage, kidney dysfunction, sings of dermatological reactions.
