Active Ingredients:

  • lovastatin

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Lovastatin is an anticholesterol preparation which belongs to a group of medicines called statins. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with blocking the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Decreased production of choleterol makes liver to collect and eliminate ''bad cholesterol'' from the blood. Lovastatin also lowers the production of tryglycerides and increases blood levels of "good cholesterol".

Medical indications: Mevacol is used in the following conditions:

  • High blood levels of cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
  • Prophylaxis of cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks, strokes
  • Prophylaxis of atherosclerosis
  • Treatment of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)

Mevacor contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Mevacor should not be taken in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Liver diseases in active phase
  • Increased activity of the liver's transaminases
  • Severe infections
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • People under 18 years of age

Mevacor should be used with caution in: chronic alcoholism, organs transplantation, chronic kidney failure, urgent surgical manipulation.

Mevacor side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Mevacor. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated.

  • Mevacor may cause the following side effects: meteorism, constipation, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
  • Serious and less common Mevacor side effects include: sings of liver damage, muscle pain, tenderness, changes in urine production, sings of dermatological reactions.
