Pravachol

Active Ingredients:

  • pravastatin

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Pravachol contains the active ingredient prevastatin which belongs to a group of medicines hypolipidemic agents called statins. Like other statin preparations Pravastatin action mechanism is associated with inhibiting the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the final stage in the biosynthesis of cholesterol in the liver cells. Decreased production of cholesterol in the blood makes liver to collect and get rid of cholesterol in the blood. Pravastatin also decreases the amount of triglycerides.

Medical indications: Pravachol is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • High triglycerides blood levels
  • Prophylaxis of cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks, strokes.

Pravachol contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Pravachol should not be taken if the following conditions which may apply to you:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Known hypersensitivity to other statin precautions
  • Severe cardiovascular diseases
  • Aggravation of liver diseases
  • Increased activity of the livers transaminases
  • Severe liver dysfunction
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

Pravachol side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Pravachol. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated.

  • Pravachol may cause the following side effects: nausea, common cold, diarrhea, skin rash, constipation, fatigue, meteorism, dizziness, heartburn, muscle pain.
  • Less common and serious Pravachol side effects include: chest pain, sings of liver damage, muscles pain, memory problems, sings of dermatological reactions.
