Active Ingredients:

  • ezetimibe

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Zetia is an anti cholesterol medication for internal use. Zetia works by selectively inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol and some herbal sterol in the intistine. After administration Ezetimibe is localized in the brush border of the small intestine and prevents the absorption of cholesterol. Decreased intake of cholesterol makes liver to collect and eliminate cholesterol from the blood. Zetia does not increase the excretion of bile acids and does not inhibits cholesterol production in the liver.

Medical indications: Zetia is approved to treat the following conditions:

  • Primary hypercholesterolemia
  • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Homozygous sitosterolemia or phytosterolaemia

Zetia contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Zetia should not be taken if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Moderate and severe liver failure
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

Zetia side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Zetia. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated.

  • Zetia in monotherapy may cause the following side effects: headache, stomach pain, diarrhea
  • Zetia in combined therapy with statins may cause: headache, fatigability, stomach pain, constipation, nausea, increased activity of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT).

Drug interaction: Zetia can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Other cholesterol preparations including fibrates, bile acid sequestrants
  • Blood thinners
  • Anti diabetes drugs
  • Immunosupressors
