Ovral

Active Ingredients:

  • norgestrel - ethinyl estradiol

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Generic Ovral contains of combination of estrogen-progestin components which are more active than natural sex hormones. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with inhibiting the release of follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones, and thus Ovral helps to suppress the ovulation. Clinical effect is enhanced due to increase the viscosity of cervical mucous, this in its turn makes difficult for the sperm cells to get into the uterine. Ovral also modifies endomethrium making implantation of the egg nearly impossible.

Medical indications:
Oral is used for the prevention of undesirable pregnancy in women over 21 years of age

Ovral contradictions, precautions and warnings:
The medication should not be taken in the following conditions:

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Severe liver disease
  • Bile passages and gall bladder diseases (cholecystitis)
  • Chronic colitis
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • History of cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks, strokes
  • Cerebrovascular diseases
  • Thromboembolia or predisposition to thromboembolia
  • Liver cancer
  • Tumors of the mammary gland
  • Diabetes
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Vaginal discharges of unknown origin
  • Migraine
  • Otosclerosis
  • Jaundice, skin itching or herpes in pregnant women

Ovral side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with generic Ovral. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Generic Ovral may cause the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, upset stomach. In rare cases dysfunction of the gall bladder, jaundice, diarrhea
  • Cardiovascular system: hot flashes, in prolonged use and in rare cases: thromboembolia, thrombosis, high blood pressure
  • Hormonal system: pain and tension in the mammary gland
  • CNS: headache, libido changes, tiredness, dismal mood
  • Other: discomfort of contact lenses
  • Urogenital system: changes in vaginal secretion, vaginal bleedings, vaginal mycosis
  • Metabolism: increased triglyceride blood levels, increased sugar blood levels, decreased tolerance to glucose

Drug interaction:
Generic Ovral can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Inductors of liver's metabolism
  • Blood thinners
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Beta blockers
  • Oral diabetes drugs, insulin
  • Dopamine receptor stimulants (bromocriptine)
  • Hepatotoxic medications especially with dantrolene (muscle relaxant)
