Depression Treatment

Depression is a disease that can bring people out of emotional balance for a long time and significantly impair quality of life (activity, personal relationships, leisure, etc.). Depression can occur as a response to previous trauma or adverse event (death of a loved one, dismissal from work, etc.), but it often develops without an apparent cause. Depression responds to treatment very well bringing patients to the full recovery.

The most common symptoms of depression are:

  • cheerless state, no response to pleasure
  • lack of interest
  • concentration and memory problems
  • indecisiveness, fear, anxiety
  • lack of energy, fatigue
  • sleep disorders
  • lost of appetite, weight loss
  • no sexual drive, decreased libido
  • heaviness in chest and stomach
  • vegetative symptoms like dry mouth, constipation, excessed sweat, etc.

To effectively treat depression, it is necessary to include biologic therapy, psychotherapy, and special social activities. By biologic therapy we mean treatment with antidepressants, herbs, and other means.

Antidepressants can be divided in many groups amongst which are:

  • tricyclic antidepressant (Imipramine, Nortriptyline, etc.)
  • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Duloxetine, Celexa, Lexapro, Seroxat, Effexor, etc.)

It is worth to mention that:

  • SSRIs treatment does not lead to drug dependence;
  • The SSRIs effects occurs in 2-3 weeks of treatment, however the improvement of health condition may occur within the first days of treatment;
  • SSRIs do not manifest such side effects like weight gain, dysuria and others. Sometimes a patient may experience nausea, somnolence, excessive sweat which disappear within 2 weeks of treatment.
  • The treatment should last from 4 to 6 months to achieve the best effect
  • In case of a repetitive depression and suicide attempts, the treatment period should be prolonged.
