Lexapro

Active Ingredients:

  • Escitalopram

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Lexapro is an antidepressant, selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, increases the concentration of the neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft, strengthens and extends the effect of serotonin on postsynaptic receptors.

Medical indications:

  • Depression
  • Panic disorders (incl. with agoraphobia)

Lexapro contraindications, precautions and warnings:

  • hypersensitivity to Escitalopram
  • adolescence
  • pregnancy and lactation
  • with caution: renal failure (CC below 30 ml / min), hypomania, mania, pharmacologically uncontrolled epilepsy, depression with suicidal attempts, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, bleeders, geriatric use.

Lexapro side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Escitalopram However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Escitalopram may cause the following side effects:

  • central nervous system: dizziness, weakness, insomnia or drowsiness, convulsions, tremor, motor disorders, serotonin syndrome (agitation, tremor, myoclonus, hyperthermia), hallucinations, mania, confusion, agitation, anxiety, depersonalization, panic attacks, irritability, visual disturbances
  • digestive system: nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, taste disturbance, decreased appetite, diarrhea, constipation
  • cardiovascular system: orthostatic hypotension
  • endocrine system: reduced secretion of ADH, galactorrhoea
  • urogenital system: decreased libido, impotence, abnormal ejaculation, anorgasmia (in women), urinary retention
  • skin: skin rash, pruritus, ecchymosis, purpura, angioedema
  • allergic reactions: anaphylactic reaction
  • laboratory values: hyponatremia, change of laboratory parameters of liver function
  • other: increased sweating, pyrexia, sinusitis, arthralgia, myalgia, withdrawal syndrome (dizziness, headaches and nausea).

Drug interaction:
Lexapro can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • MAO inhibitors
  • ethanol
  • anticonvulsants
  • diuretics
  • drugs which are metabolized by CYP2C19 (proton pump inhibitors, contraceptives, antidepressants)
  • serotonergic agents
  • Li+ drugs
  • hypnotics
  • drugs influencing blood coagulation
  • CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 inhibitors
  • beta blockers
