Active Ingredients:

  • rosiglitazone

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Oral hypoglycemic agent, belongs to the group of thiazolidinediones. A selective agonist of nuclear receptors PPARγ (peroxisomal proliferator activated gamma). Rosiglitazone lowers the level of blood glucose, increases sensitivity to insulin in the adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and liver tissue, improves the course of metabolic processes, reduces the levels of glucose, insulin and free fatty acids in the blood.

Medical indications: The drug is used in treatment of Diabetes mellitus type 2:

- As monotherapy in case of ineffectiveness of diet therapy and exercise;

- In combination with derivatives of sulfonylurea, metformin to improve glycemic control;

- In combination with derivatives of sulfonylurea and metformin (triple combination therapy) to improve glycemic control

Avandia contradictions, precautions and warnings: The drug should not be used in:

  • Hypersensitivity to rosiglitazone and other components of the drug
  • Diabetes mellitus type 1
  • Cardiac failure
  • Moderate or severe hepatic dysfunction
  • Pregnancy, lactation (breastfeeding)
  • Pediatric and adolescent patients
  • With caution: severe renal insufficiency

Avandia side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with rosiglitazone. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Avandia may cause the following side effects:

  • hemopoietic system: anemia
  • metabolism: hypercholesteremia, hypergliceridemia, hyperlipidemia, weight gain, increased appetite
  • CNS: dizziness
  • cardiovascular system: myocardial ischemia
  • digestive system: constipation
  • musculoskeletal system: fractures
  • systemic reactions: swelling

Drug interaction:

Avandia can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • CYP2C8 inhibitors
  • Weight loss therapy
