Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Metformin is a biguanide hypoglycemic agent for oral administration. In patients with diabetes reduces the concentration of glucose in the blood by inhibiting gluconeogenesis in the liver, reducing glucose absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and enhancing its utilization in the tissues. Metformin stabilizes or reduces body weight, improves the fibrinolytic characteristic of blood.

Medical indications:

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults (including in the ineffectiveness of sulfonylurea), particularly in cases accompanied by obesity

Metformin contraindications, precautions and warnings:

Hypersensitivity, hyperglycemic coma, ketoacidosis, renal insufficiency, liver diseases, heart insufficiency, acute myocardial infarction, respiratory disorders, dehydration
Infectious diseases, extensive surgery, trauma
Alcoholism, low calorie diet (less than 1000 kcal / day), lactic acidosis (including history), pregnancy, lactation
With caution: elderly patients, heavy physical work

Metformin side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Metformin. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Metformin may cause the following side effects:

Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth, decreased appetite, indigestion, flatulence, abdominal pain
Metabolism: in some cases - lactic acidosis (weakness, myalgia, respiratory disorders, drowsiness, abdominal pain, hypothermia, lowering blood pressure, reflex bradycardia)
In long term treatment - hypovitaminosis B12 (malabsorption)
Allergic reactions: skin rash
