Digestive System

Digestive system is a complex chemical laboratory where food is crushed and mixed with various digestive juices and gradually moves from one section to another, staying in each as much as it is necessary for the processing.

The most frequent diseases of the digestive system are gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulcers, colitis, and disbacteriosis.

Gastritis is an inflammation of mucous coat of stomach's wall. Gastritis can be treated with different medications and eating habit change. The most common drugs to treat gastritis are:

  • antacids that reduces the level of acid produced by stomach
  • histamine H2-receptor antagonists that prevent the acid production by stomach (Pepcid, Ranitidine)
  • proton pump inhibitors that are used for long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production (Aciphex, Nexium, Lansoprazole, Prevacid, Protonix, Omeprazole)
  • cytoprotectants that are used to protect tissues of the inner membrane of the stomach and small intestine.

To treat Heliobacter pilori that is the main cause of ulcers, it is necessary to combine antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors and sometimes antacids. Doctors prefer to prescribe such medications to treat ulcers like Nexium, Aciphex, etc. due to their effectiveness and safety.

As to colitis, it can occur due to many factors: intestinal infection, gastrointestinal tract disorders, functional intestinal diseases like irritable colon, hyperkinetic constipation, hypokinetic constipation, functional diarrhea. Depending on the colitis origin, it can be treated with antibiotics, sulfanilamides, 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives, anti-diarrheal agents (Loperamide)

The medical treatment of the digestive system diseases should be paired with a well-balanced diet and regular medical checks in order to keep healthy the gastrointestinal tract and prevent severe stomach disorders.
