Imodium works by binding to opioid receptors in the intestinal wall where it inhibits the release of acetylcholine and prostoglandins. Imodium lowers bowel movement and increases the passage time of the stomach contents through the intestine. Imodium also increases the tonicity of the anal sphincter, decreasing incontinence of the fecal masses and urge to defecate.
