How does Imodium work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Imodium contains the active ingredient Loperamide which belongs to a group of anti-diarrheal preparations. Imodium works by binding to opioid receptors in the intestinal wall where it inhibits the release of acetylcholine and prostoglandins. Imodium lowers bowel movement and increases the passage time of the stomach contents through the intestine. Imodium also increases the tonicity of the anal sphincter, decreasing incontinence of the fecal masses and urge to defecate.

The drug is prescribed for the treatment of the following diseases:

  • Acute diarrhea
  • Chronic diarrhea

What should a patient know before using Imodium?

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Intestinal congestion
  • Diverticular disease
  • Acute ulcerous colitis
  • Pseudomembranous enterocolitis
  • Pregnancy, lactation period
  • Liver and kidney insufficiency
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Children under 6 years of age

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

  • Digestive system: constipation, flatulence, intestinal colic, pain and discomfort in the stomach, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth,in rare cases – intestinal congestion
  • CNS and peripheral nervous system: tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness.
  • Metabolism: low blood volume, decreased amount of electrolytes.
  • Allergic reactions: skin rash
