How does Pepcid work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Pepcid is an H2-histamine receptor blocking agent. It works as histamine-2 receptor blocker, inhibitor of bazal and stimulated hydrochloric acid secretion. Pepcid suppresses pepsin activity and is not fully absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It metabolizes in the liver and is eliminated by the kidneys.

Pepcid is used in treatment of:

  • Gastritis
  • Prophylaxis of gastric and duodenal ulcer
  • Symptomatic ulcer treatment
  • Erosive gastroduodenitis
  • Functional dyspepsia caused by increased secretory stomach function
  • Epigastric burning
  • Reflux esophagitis
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

What should a patient know before using Pepcid?

The Pepcid should not be used in cases of:
