Epilepsy

Before determining what is epilepsy we need to know what is a seizure. A Seizure is an episode of disturbed brain fucntion that may cause changes in attention or behavior of a person. The condition is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy on the other hand is a brain disorder which involves repeated spontaneous different type seizures. The diagnosis of epilepsy may only be established in cases when seizures are repeated 2 or more times and no seizure inducing disease other then epilepsy can be found in the individual. Epilepsy is not a contagious nor mental illness.

The condition is widely spread. Scientific data states 1 in every 200 adults suffers from epilepsy and 7 out of a 1000 children under the age of 16 are affected by the disorder. Epilepsy may develop at any age but it is frequently diagnosed in youth - 75% of all epilepsy cases are established before the individual reaches 20 years. In older age the causes foe epilepsy may vary from cerebrovascular trauma, stroke to brain tumors. In elderly individuals after 60 the possibility of epilepsy appearance is increased.

Epilepsy may be induced by different conditions. A big role in epilepsy occurrence plays heredity as 40% of individuals suffering from epilepsy have one or more relatives affected by the disorder. Epileptic seizures differ in intensity and expression. A seizure that affects only a part of the brain is called partial or localized, if the spontaneous electrical activity affects all of the brain the seizure is called generalized. Some seizures may at first affect only a part of the brain and then spread all over the cerebrum. In a large number of cases the cause of epilepsy may not be determined and the treatment therefore is symptomatic.

The main determined reasons that increase the chance of epilepsy appearance are:

  • Cerebrovascular trauma
  • Stroke
  • Cerebral tumors
  • Oxygen and blood-flow insufficiency during or before delivery
  • Brain malformation
  • Meningitis, viral and parasitic infections, cerebral abscess
  • Hereditary factors
