High Blood Pressure

Hypertension is a pathologic condition in which high blood pressure is not caused by natural reaction of the organism to certain physiological situations but by imbalance of systems that regulate arterial tension.

Hypertension as an increase in blood pressure is one of the most common causes of cardiovascular diseases. As any chronic disorder, hypertension can be corrected only following the constant and competent care, and requires the patient to consciously change his lifestyle. Only the combination of these two factors makes it possible to maintain optimal blood pressure, and thus maintain good health and performance for many years.

To lower high blood pressure, numerous antihypertensive drugs are used:

  • diuretics that are medications intended to increase the excretion of urine from the body and to reduce the content of the liquids and salts in tissues and serous cavities (Furosemide, Microzide)
  • beta-blockers that is a group of drugs that specifically block the effects of stimulation of beta-adrenoreactive body systems (Tenormin, Propranolol)
  • vasodilators, a group of drug intended for vasorelaxation and blood vessel dilatation
  • angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors that are a group of drugs that makes the arteries to constrict by interference with angiotensin released in the body (Altace)
  • angiotensin II receptor blockers include drugs that block the effects of angiotensin (Cozaar)
  • calcium antagonists, or calcium channel blockers are used to decrease the heart rate and to relax the blood vessels (Norvasc).

In some cases people do not need to take any of the above listed drugs but it's enough to reduce weight and to start doing sports.
