Liver Disease

Many diseases of the liver in the early stages are asymptomatic, and with no special check they may be not discovered because liver is able to function having 20% of healthy tissue. Sometimes a person learns about the liver problems by accident, passing blood test for other pathologies.

Symptoms of liver problems are scarce, they often are not paid due importance: unmotivated fatigue, decreased appetite, poor tolerance to fatty foods, bitter taste in the mouth, discomfort in the right hypochondrium. Complaints about the appearance of yellow skin are also characteristic of liver diseases. At the beginning, patients or their relatives may notice the yellowness of sclera, then the skin. At the same time a person may notice the appearance of dark-colored urine, discoloration of feces.

The list of liver problems includes the following diseases:

  • acute hepatitis
  • chronic hepatitis
  • cirrhosis
  • liver steatosis
  • primary biliary cirrhosis
  • primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • functional hyperbilirubinemia
  • hepato-lenticular degeneration
  • amyloidosis
  • liver tumors
  • liver cysts
  • liver abscess

On the background of jaundice, particularly long-lasting, patients may experience itching. This indicates an increase in the quantity of bile components in the blood.

Patients with liver problems very often complaint about weakness, apathy, fatigue, decreased performance. There may be headaches, tendency to fainting. Often, there are hemorrhages in the skin. Women may have irregular menstrual cycle, men may notice problems with erection.

The treatment of liver problems comprises diet, regimen and use of etiotropic ((acting on the cause of the disease) and pathogenic (acting on the mechanism of the disease) therapy.

Etiotropictreatment of alcoholic liver problems consists in full and unconditional cessation of alcohol. In toxic and medicinal forms of liver disease, the patient should stop any contact with the toxic agent or to discontinue the bad medication. For the effective treatment of viral liver problems caused by viruses B and C should be used antiviral agents (interferon-alpha, lamivudine and ribavirin). The choice of medication and treatment regimen in each case must be determined by physician.

The basis of a modern pathogenetic treatment of patients with chronic diffuse liver problems belongs to the so-called hepatoprotectors. The most effective hepatoprotector nowadays is ursodeoxycholic acid (Actigall, Ursosan, Urso).
