Active Ingredients:

  • Sumatriptan

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Sumatriptan is a selective agonist of receptors 5-HT1 types 5-HT1D, 5-HT1B and 5-HT1F. The medication does not act on 5-HT2 5-HT7. By activating these receptors in the carotid artery, the medication causes their narrowing. The dilation and edema of carotid artery (arteria basilaris) are considered the main reason of migraine. The medication also inhibits the activity of trifacial nerve.

Medical indications:

Generic Imitrex is used for the relieve of migraine attacks.

Imitrex contradictions, precautions and warnings:

The medication should not be taken in:

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Hemilegic, basilar and ophthalmoplegic form of migraine
  • Recent heart attack
  • Arrhythmia
  • Angina, coronary heart diseases including and Prinzmetal's angina
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Occlusive diseases of the peripheral vessels
  • Strokes and disorders of the brain circulation
  • Epilepsy
  • Liver or kidney dysfunctions
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Elderly age
  • Children and adolescents under 18 years of age

Imitrex side effects:As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Imitrex. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Imitrex may cause the following side effects:

  • Cardiovascular diseases: decreased or increased blood pressure, bradycardia, tachycardia, increased heart rate, in rare cases- disorders of the cardiac rhythm. In individual cases- ECG changes, heart attacks, spasms of the coronary arteries,Raynaud's syndrome)
  • Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, increased activity of the livers transaminases, dysphagia, ischemic colitis.
  • Nervous system: drowsiness, hot flashes, weakness, drowsiness, tiredness, seizures. Pain, tingling, vision problems, nystagmus, diplopy.
  • Allergic reactions: hives, skin rash, erythema, anaphylactic reactions.

Drug interaction:

Imitrex can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Certain antidepressants
  • Fibromyalgia drugs
  • Triptans
  • Ergot preparations
  • MAO inhibitors
