Levothroid

Active Ingredients:

  • Levothyroxine sodium

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

Levothroid contains Levothyroxine sodium that works by replacing the deficiency of thyroid gland hormones. Mechanisms of metabolic effects include receptor binding to genome, changes of oxidative metabolism in mitochondrions and regulation of intracellular inflow and outflow of cations. In low doses the medication exerts anabolic action, in therapeutic doses Levothyroxine stimulates growth and development, increases the demand of tissues in oxygen, increases functional activity of cardiovascular and central nervous system. In high doses Levothroid inhibits the synthesis of thyrotropin-releasing hormone.

Medical indications:

Levothroid is indicated in the following conditions:

  • Euthyroid goiter
  • Hypothyroidism
  • After resection of thyroid gland and as a prophylaxis of goiter relapses
  • Thyroid gland cancer (after operative treatment)
  • Basedow's goiter
  • Thyroid suppression test

Levothroid contradictions, precautions and warnings:

Levothroid is contraindicated for use in:

  • Untreated thyrotoxicosis
  • Untreated pituitary insufficiency
  • Untreated insufficiency of adrenal cortex
  • Acute myocardium infarction
  • Acute myocarditis
  • Acute pancarditis
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

The medication should be used with caution in: coronary heart disease (atherosclerosis, stenocardia, heart attacks in anamnesis), arterial hypertension, arrhythmia, diabetes, malabsorption syndrome.

Levothroid side effects:

As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Levothroid. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Possible levothyroxine side effects include:

  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the lips, mouth and throat

High doses of Levothyroxine include:

  • Increased sweating
  • Increased appetite
  • Tachycardia
  • Insomnia
  • Hair loss
  • Hot flashes
  • Menstrual problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizures
