Active Ingredients:

  • Levothyroxine sodium

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:

The active ingredient of Levoxyl – Levothyroxine sodium works by replacing natural thyroid gland hormones. Action mechanisms is achieved due to receptor binding with genome, changes of oxidative metabolism in mitochondrions and regulation of intracellular cations inflow and outflow. In low doses Levothyroxide exerts anabolic action, stimulates growth and development, increases the demand of tissues in oxygen, regulates metabolism of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, increases functional activity of cardiovascular system and central nervous system. Clinical effect is achieved in 3-5 days.

Medical indications:

Levoxyl is indicated in the following conditions:

  • Euthyroid goiter
  • Thyroid gland cancer (after operative treatment)
  • Basedow's goiter
  • Thyroid suppression test
  • Hypothyroidism
  • After resection of thyroid gland and as a prophylaxis of goiter relapses

Levoxyl contradictions, precautions and warnings:

Levoxyl is contraindicated for use in:

  • Uncontrolled thyrotoxicosis
  • Uncontrolled pituitary insufficiency
  • Uncontrolled insufficiency of adrenal cortex
  • Acute heart attack
  • Acute myocarditis
  • Acute pancarditis
  • Reactions of hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

The medication should be used with caution in: coronary heart disease (atherosclerosis, stenocardia, heart attacks in anamnesis), arterial hypertension, arrhythmia, diabetes, malabsorption syndrome.

Levoxyl side effects:

As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Levoxyl. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Possible levothyroxine side effects include:

  • Skin rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the lips, mouth and throat

High doses of Levothyroxine include:

  • Increased sweating
  • Hot flashes
  • Menstrual problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Increased appetite
  • Tachycardia
  • Insomnia
  • Hair loss
