Active Ingredients:

  • Valaciclovir (Valacyclovir)

The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Valtrex manufactured by Cipla is available under commercial name Valcivir.

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication: Valacyclovir is a pro-drug which in the organism is metabolized to its active metabolite acyclovir. And acyclovir interacts with viral DNA thus blocking viral replication.

Medical indications: The drug is intended for use in:

  • Herpes Zoster
  • Skin and mucous membrane infections caused the Herpes simplex virus
  • Prophylaxis of recurrent herpes infection
  • Prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus infections in patients with transplants

Valtrex contraindications, precautions and warnings: The drug must not be used in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Kidney transplantation

The drug should be used with caution in:

  • Renal failure
  • HIV infections
  • Young age prior to 12 years
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Valacyclovir side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Valtrex. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Valacyclovir may cause the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • dysmenorrhea

  • Depression
