Evista

Active Ingredients:

  • raloxifene HCl

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication: Evista is a selective modulator of estrogen receptors. Evista acts as agonist on the non-reproductive tissue and antagonist on the reproductive tissues. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with binding to estrogen receptors and regulation the genes expression. Evista lowers the process of resorbtion of the bone tissue and normalizes the balance of calcium in the organism via lowering the loss of calcium with urine.

Medical indications:
Evista is used in prophylaxis of osteoporosis in women in postmenopause period. Evista is also recommended for reducing the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women with or without osteoporosis.

Evista contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Evista should not be taken in the following conditions:

  • Thromboembolia including thrombosis of the deep veins
  • Embolia of the lung artery and thrombosis of the retina's veins
  • Liver diseases including cholestasis
  • Severe kidney dysfunction
  • Uterine bleedings of unknown etiology
  • Cancer of the mammary gland
  • Cancer of the endomethrium
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

Evista side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Evista. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Evista may cause the following side effects:

  • Blood coagulation system: thrombocytopenia, venous thromboembilia, embolia of the lung artery, thrombosis if the retina's veins
  • Blood circulatory system: vasodilatation (hot flashes)
  • Other: water retention, flu like symptoms, muscles spasms, headache, weight gain, vaginal discharges.

Drug interaction: Evista can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Bile-acid sequestrants
  • Certain birth control pills
  • Hormonal replacement therapy

  • Tranquilizers
