Fosamax

Active Ingredients:

  • alendronate sodium

Action mechanism and therapeutic effect of the medication:
Fosamax contains the active ingredient alendronate which belongs to a group of medicines called bisphosphonates which are localized in the areas of active bone resorption. Alendronate inhibits the process of production of new bone tissue and contributes to the formation of normal bone tissue. In therapeutic doses alendronate does not cause osteomalacia.

Medical indications: Fosamax is approved to treat the following conditions:

  • treatment of osteoporosis in women in postmenopause
  • prophylaxis of osteoporosis in women
  • treatment of osteoporosis in men
  • treatment and prophylaxis of osteoporosis which is induced by glucocorticoids in men and women
  • treatment of deforming osteosis

Fosamax contraindications, precautions and warnings:
Fosamax should not be taken in:

  • Esophagus diseases which slow down its evacuation
  • Inability to stay and sit square within 30 minutes
  • Low calcium blood levels
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

Fosamax should be used with caution in: aggravation of digestive tract diseases. It is not recommend to indicate Fosamax to patients with kidney dysfunction in creatinine clearance less than 33ml/min.

Fosamax side effects: As with any other drug, side effects can occur with Fosamax. However, it does not mean that everyone who takes the medicine will experience these adverse effects. In most cases the preparation is well tolerated. Fosamax may cause the following side effects:

  • Digestive system: stomach pain, dyspepsia, meteorism, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, gastritis
  • Musculoskeletal system: myalgia, pain in the bones, joints, muscular seizures, myalgia, pain in the bones and joints.
  • Dermatological reactions: skin rash, erythema, photosensibilization, itching
  • Allergic reactions: hives, Quinke's edema.
  • Metabolism: low calcium blood levels
  • Sense organs: uveitis, sclreritis, episcleritis
  • Laboratory indexes: decreased levels of calcium and phosphates in the blood

Drug interaction:
Fosamax can potentially interact with the following groups of drugs:

  • Calcium preparations and supplements
  • Iron and magnesium supplements
  • NSAID's
  • Osteoporosis medications
